Equine hydrotherapy uses water as a method of providing rehabilitation following an injury, as well as being used to help build and maintain fitness in some cases. Types of hydrotherapy suitable for horses include swimming, water treadmills and spas, as well as traditional cold hosing of limbs which helps stop fluid buildup and provides pain relief.
Equine Thermal Therapy
Thermal therapies, each through different methods, limit tissue damage and improve or speed up healing. The goal is to restore the affected area to full function. The application of cold or cryo-therapy is the most common and the most effective if used in the acute phase, post injury or surgery. Heat therapy increases the metabolic activity in cells, which leads to locally increased demand for oxygen, and subsequent induced capillary dilation.
Equine Massage Therapy
Equine Massage Therapy uses a variety of massage techniques and strokes to stimulate blood flow to different areas of the body. This encourages blood flow and brings in oxygen and other nutrients, at the same time removing lactic acid build up and eliminating other metabolic waste from the body. This encourages injured muscles to heal, and healthy muscles to stay flexible and pain free.
